Take a second: simple checks to protect your money from scams

October is Cyber Security Action Month, and this year’s national theme is “Take a second.” The message is simple: scammers rely on speed, distraction and pressure. A short pause before you click, reply or transfer money is one of the best protections you have.

At Securinvest, protecting our clients’ financial wellbeing goes beyond advice. Here are some practical checks to help keep your money and personal information safe.

When to pause and check

An email or text about changed bank details. Scammers often pose as businesses you trust, including financial advisers, mortgage brokers and solicitors, and ask you to pay into a “new” account. Before transferring any money, always confirm the details by phone, using a number you already know.

A message that feels urgent. Pressure to act immediately is a common warning sign. Messages claiming your account will be closed, a payment is overdue or a settlement must happen today are designed to rush you. Genuine organisations will always give you time to check.

A link or attachment you weren’t expecting. Even if a message appears to come from someone you know, don’t open links or attachments until you’ve confirmed they’re genuine.

If something doesn’t feel right

1. Stop. Don’t click, reply or transfer any money.
2. Call the organisation on a number you know is genuine, not one listed in the message.
3. If you’ve already shared details or sent money, contact your bank immediately.
